Job Description and Duties

Patton State Hospital, Human Resources Department is accepting applications for at least one (1) Limited Term, Full-Time Plumber I position in the Facility Operations Department. The position is under the direction of the Plumbing Supervisor. A Training and Development (T&D) assignment may be considered. Limited term positions may be extended up to 24 months with the possibility of becoming Permanent.

The Plumber I position is established to support a specific facility improvement project involving anti-ligature restroom renovations within patient-occupied buildings. The incumbent will perform plumbing duties associated with the project and will work collaboratively with contractors and other skilled trade staff to complete assigned renovations in accordance with applicable plans, specifications, safety requirements, and institutional procedures. The incumbent must be able to follow oral and written instructions and may provide directions to unskilled assistants as assigned.

Duties may include:

• Installing, maintaining, repairing, and modifying plumbing systems and fixtures
• Reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, and specifications
• Preparing rough sketches
• Estimating materials and labor for minor plumbing work
• Maintaining records and preparing basic reports
• Properly using and caring for tools, materials, and equipment

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Principles, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in plumbing; Construction and General Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety applicable to plumbing; and relevant building codes are needed for this opportunity.

The position requires the ability to perform the physical demands associated with the plumbing trade, including bending, reaching, climbing stairs, navigating slopes and inclines, working at heights, and performing work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Working Conditions

Patton is a forensic psychiatric hospital and was established in 1890 and opened in 1893. DSH-Patton provides treatment to forensically and civilly committed patients within a secure treatment area. The hospital does not accept voluntary admissions.  

Special Requirements

• The position(s) require(s) a Drug Screening be passed prior to being hired.

• The position(s) require(s) Medical Clearance prior to being hired.

The incumbent may be required to work various shifts and schedules and perform duties in a variety of settings and security areas throughout the hospital. Overtime and call-back assignments may be required in accordance with facility Operations Call Back Procedures for Bargaining Units 12 and 13 and based on the operational needs of the hospital. Employees are required to complete an annual health review, as well as additional health reviews, when necessary, to ensure they are able to safely perform the essential functions of the position and meet applicable health and safety requirements.

Training & Development (T&D)

T raining and Development (T&D) assignments are temporary assignments of up to 24 months for training purposes.  DSH encourages the use of T&D assignments to provide employees the opportunity to obtain any or a combination of the following:

1. Provide the experience necessary to satisfy the experience component of the minimum qualifications of the T&D classification or gain competencies for the preferred or desirable qualifications of the T&D classification.
2. Provide employees broader experience and skills that will improve their ability to perform in their current position.
3. Help prepare employees for future promotions; or
4. Facilitate an employee’s entry into a new occupational field .

An employee must have permanent status in their present State classification. An employee currently in a Limited Term position is not eligible for a T&D assignment. The employee may, but is not required to, satisfy the minimum qualifications of the T&D classification; except, the employee shall possess any licensure, certificate, or similar credential that is a component of the minimum qualifications.
